My Father. My Hero. James J. Rowland

My father lived an extraordinary life. Born in Gweedore, Ireland he traveled to the US on the USS California in 1926 at the age of 4. He grew up on Granite Street in Brooklyn and shortly after Pearl Harbor he volunteered to join the US Marines. Because of a punctured eardrum he was rejected... Undeterred, he pestered a recruiter who relented and let him join the Corp. The image in his hand was taken when he was about 18. In 2012 I thought it would be awesome to show him seated in his living room with that very picture from decades ago. By his side is his brother Stephens' Navy Flag... this is one of my most favorite images... Dad passed away in July 2014. He left a legacy of greatness on so many levels, but he was first and will always remain a Marine. I miss him every minute of every day, and I'm thankful for picking up a camera if for nothing else, to capture this moment. "Semper Fi" Dad...

My youngest son. Wanted to capture that "freckle bridge" across his nose and his amazing liquid brown eyes. Shot with a beauty dish (key light) and a soft box (fill).
